The craniosacral rhythm, like our heartbeat and our breath, is a vital part of our existence. This palpable rhythm is created by the subtle flow of cerebrospinal fluid through the craniosacral system which involves all of the bones of the skull, face and mouth and down to the lower end of the spine and sacrum. Cerebrospinal fluid flows within the ventricles in the brain and ultimately to the subarachnoid space which covers the brain and spinal cord, acting as a cushion for the brain's cortex and protecting the central nervous system from inside the skull.
Visualize the cerebrospinal fluid as it fills the ventricular system around and inside the brain and then down into the spinal canal. This is a semi-closed hydraulic system, like a bathtub that is constantly draining while the faucet is turned on and off. When the system is full of cerebrospinal fluid, it stretches the sutures in the skull which then signals the system to turn the "faucet" off. As the "bathtub" fills and drains, it creates a rhythm that is felt throughout the entire body, like a ripple in a pond after a stone is thrown in.
When the rhythm is disturbed due to physical or emotional trauma, the body attempts to wall off the area of disturbance in order to maintain the whole organism's integrity and balance. Eventually the body will no longer be able to carry the load and dysfunction will be evident. The goal of a Craniosacral Therapist is to facilitate optimal balance in this system, and to release any areas of restriction. These restrictions can be the result of either physical or emotional trauma.
Since Craniosacral Therapy works directly with the central nervous system and all of the body's regulatory systems, it not only release restrictions but also strengthens the body's natural resistance to illness. Very light touch is used to gently facilitate the release of restrictions. As these subtle changes take place, some people may experience a variety of emotions and/or physical sensations. This is a profound form of healing in which the body continues to re-balance and reorient itself both during the session and far beyond the treatment room.
